Connecting the conflict with intercultural philosophy
- Intercultural philosophy allows effective communication between cultures. It seeks for equality and wants to make a change, difference.
- There are four perspectives of intercultural philosophy and the one who relates to diverse classroom (intercultural conflict) is the pedagogic perspective.
- Pedagogic perspective involves teaching the intercultural spirit in all aspects of life (Molina, 2017).
Possible Solutions
- Strategies to manage cultural differences in the classroom
- Differentiated Curriculum (individualized to meet the diverse needs of all the students in one class)
- Teachers don´t need to avoid the topic in class and must engage their students to seek to understand other perspectives and listen to other points of view.
- Promote respect about the differences between cultures, in that way, teachers can build strong relationships with students and families.
Culture and conflict resolution
Styles
- Collaboration: means working together to maximize the number of objectives for the people involve in the conflict (Molina, 2017). Reflects a high concern for self and a high concern for other.
- Components of collaboration
- Confrontation: it recognizes that there is a conflict and examines it.
- Integration: find equal solutions for both sides of the conflict.
- Sooth the conflict: calm the feeling of the other person and wait for the adequate moment to start a dialogue about the problem.
- Avoidance: when someone wants to talk about the conflict and we ignore it. There are some situations where it is appropiate to avoid the problem. This style happens normally with teachers or parents who want to avoid the conflict.
